Chapter Thirteen

“Knock, knock,” a voice said from outside the bedroom door. “Room service! Coming in!”

Lizzie turned her head just in time to see a stunningly beautiful, tall, slender brunette with long, loose curls and warm brown eyes stroll into the room. She was dressed like a fashion model: form-fitting black leather pants, spiky leather ankle boots, a black leather biker jacket, with a creamy white scarf draped effortlessly around her neck. So perfectly Italian—and entirely opposite of Lizzie, who never once in her life put on a pair of high-heeled boots—or wore leather, for that matter.

She had something in a bowl in her left hand and gave a little wave with her right one.

“Hi!” she said, her smile bright and wide and sincere. “I’m Valentina—I’m the Romeo you’ll fall in love with. And I brought you this.”

She handed a bowl of chocolate gelato to Lizzie, who gazed up at her as if she’d just been visited by an angel. Ice cream... was this woman a mind reader or what?

She smiled back. “I’d actually sell my soul to the person who would bring me chocolate ice cream, so, yeah, count on me falling in love with you at the very least,” Lizzie said, waving back. “I’m Lizzie by the way.”

“Lizard?” Valentina said with a giggle.

Lizzie shook her head. “Exactly. That’s me: Lizzie the Lizard. Note the spiny skin and moveable eyelids. If you’re lucky I’ll show you how I can catch a fly with my tongue.” She gave her a wink.

“So you’re on the mend, then?” Valentina said. “I say that because Allegra told me you were about half-dead yesterday. Thank goodness for miracle drugs, no?”

Lizzie nodded. “You said it. I hardly have a recollection of what happened yesterday, to tell the truth. I was so out of it. Though I have to say I’ve never had someone give me a bath before, so there was that.”

Valentina knit her brows. “Not even with a guy? Oh, sweetie, you’re so missing out.”

Lizzie blushed. It was laughable how much she hadn’t done with a guy but certainly never that. Maybe she was socially stunted but she’d only ever had a few awkward sexual encounters with boys when she was in college, and since then, she’d been on the move, never anywhere long enough to establish a relationship. She wasn’t one to just sleep with (let alone bathe with!) anyone she’d just met. Nowadays when she had a chance to get cleaned up, it involved a lot of scrubbing much dirt off her skin. Nothing sexy about that. Working the land was not for anyone afraid to get dirt under their fingernails.

“I’ll have to add it to my list,” Lizzie said, feeling a bit embarrassed. “Though I probably don’t have to worry about that any time in the near future. My lifestyle doesn’t exactly lend itself to such things.”

“I see.” Valentina nodded. “Interesting... So what exactly is your lifestyle? And maybe you should expand your horizons so that your lifestyle does lend itself to ‘such things.
